OUR HISTORY
A Tradition of Excellence
Established in 1848, the Bathurst Agricultural Show celebrates its 116th event and proudly holds the title of the oldest continuously running agricultural show in South Africa. What began as a gathering of local farmers has grown into a long-standing tradition that continues to celebrate agriculture, rural skills, and community life in the Eastern Cape.

OUR HISTORY
The Bathurst Agricultural Show has deep roots in the Eastern Cape’s agricultural and community life, stretching back more than 170 years. Its story begins in the mid-19th century, when local farmers and settlers came together with a shared purpose: to promote agriculture, celebrate rural skills, and strengthen community bonds.
In April 1848, a meeting in Bathurst led to the formation of the Lower Albany Agricultural Society — a group of early settlers and community leaders united by a common goal: “to hold Agricultural Shows at Bathurst.”
The first Bathurst Agricultural Show was held on 6 March 1850, with livestock, grains and produce on display, and spirited competition among prize-winners. Early prizes included awards for the best wheat, maize, livestock and dairy products — a remarkable beginning that set the tone for what was to become one of the Eastern Cape’s most enduring annual celebrations.
In the years that followed, the show continued to evolve, becoming a highlight on the regional calendar. Over time it weathered starts and stops in its early days, grew in scale, and built a tradition that linked the town with its rural hinterland. By the early 20th century, the show was such a fixture in local life that celebrations marked 100 years of shows in 2008, acknowledging its longstanding place in the community.
Throughout its history, the Bathurst Agricultural Show has always reflected the spirit of the community — a mix of farming pride, friendly competition, innovation, and shared purpose. Today, it stands not only as a showcase of agriculture and rural industry, but as a place where families, farmers, artisans, exhibitors, and visitors come together to celebrate what makes this region special.
